Mofokeng’s solo exhibition presented by Autograph ABP, this issue of the
newspaper, introduced by Indra Khanna, features a portfolio of 12 prints.
Mofokeng, who was born in 1956, began work as a street photographer in Soweto,
Johannesburg and later joined Afrapix, an agency that
documented popular resistance to apartheid. He has been described by Simon
Njami as “one of the most important photographers of his generation.”
In 2006, Autograph ABP and Iziko produced Mafokeng’s retrospective exhibition Invoice at the South Africa National Gallery. This publication celebrates his first solo exhibition in the UK, which is a reconfiguration of that earlier project.
