Rotimi Fani-Kayode was a seminal and highly influential figure in 1980s black British and African contemporary art. Although his career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 34, Fani-Kayode nonetheless remains an important influence in contemporary photography.

In his timeless and highly saturated large-scale colour and black and white portraits, the black male body takes centre stage. The works explore complex personal and political notions of desire, spirituality and cultural dislocation. More specifically, Fani-Kayode fuses ancestral memories and a provocative, multi-layered symbolism with archetypal motifs from European and African cultures and subcultures. Fani-Kayode uses the medium of photography not only to question issues of sexuality and homoerotic desire, but also to address themes of diaspora and belonging, and the tensions between his homosexuality and his Yoruba upbringing.

Rotimi Fani-Kayode was born in Nigeria to a prominent Yoruba family who left Africa as refugees in 1966. He studied at Georgetown University and the Pratt Institute in the United States, before settling in the United Kingdom in 1983, where he lived and worked until his death. His photographs have been exhibited and published internationally since 1985, and are represented in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Walther Collection, and numerous other private and public collections worldwide. Fani-Kayode was a co-founder and first chair of Autograph ABP.
